POTA - Who is activating?

What’s POTA?
POTA stands for Parks on the Air, and it’s one of the most fun and adventurous ways to enjoy ham radio.

The idea’s simple: you grab your radio gear, head out to a national park, state park, or other designated location, and start making contacts. That’s called “activating” a park.

On the flip side, you can also stay at home (or anywhere, really) and try to contact those activators. That’s called being a hunter.

It’s like a radio version of geocaching meets field day — part outdoor adventure, part on-air challenge, and 100% ham radio fun. You get points, awards, and bragging rights for contacting or activating parks.

Why people love POTA:

  • You get to combine ham radio with hiking, camping, or road-tripping

  • Great way to test your portable setup

  • Tons of activity on the bands

  • Super friendly community

  • And let’s be honest — it just feels awesome calling “CQ POTA” from a mountaintop or forest!
